Follow these steps before starting your WordPress blogging
- Remove Default “Admin”
“Admin” is the default WordPress user login. By keeping it, you are going to invite hackers to attack your blog. If you keep it, anyone can guess. To play safe, create a new user with other name. Go to “Users > Add New” and allow admin rights to the user. Now remove the default “Admin”.
- Akismet API Key
Upon installing WordPress, it will show an Akismet plugin in the plugins section. With this plugin, you can keep your comment section clean and filter all the spam comments in the folder. Activate the plugin to make it work and get API key from the official website and use it on the blog.
- Change Permalinks Settings
It is URL’s structure setting. You may just go to “Setting” and then “Permalinks” to the dashboard of your WordPress blog. You can pick any structure from the list or make your own with “Custom” option. It is recommended to use /%postname%/.
- Generate Sitemap
Another big thing you need to do. You should generate sitemap on the blog and then share it to Google’s Webmaster tool. Install Google XML sitemap generator to do it.
Make sure your blog is verified to submit your XML sitemap. If not, verify your blog first. You can get the verification code from the webmaster and install it to the blog according to the Google Webmaster’s instructions.
It is very important to submit your sitemap to the webmaster as it is helpful for the Google Crawlers to find the blog as well as its internal pages. Basically, it is helpful to smoothen the crawling process of the blog.
- Submit Your Blog to Google Analytics
Google Analytics is actually a tool that gives you every detail of the traffic on your blog. Install Google Analytics to your blog to analyze the traffic of your blog. All you need to set up your blog to Google Analytics, get tracking id, and install it on your blog according to the instructions.
- Set up SEO Plugins
It is very important to install an SEO plugin. You can do it according to your needs. There are different plugins available, such as WordPress SEO by Yoast, All in one SEO, SEOpresser, SEO ultimate etc. Different plugins are used for different purposes. Consider your needs before installing them. If you are starting up, it is recommended to install All in One SEO.
- Pick a Good Theme
You can either buy a premium theme or use a free one on your blog. Be sure they don’t have harmful codes. Use only those themes that are offered by reputed vendors such as Theme Junkie, Mythemeshop, Tesla Theme, etc.
